And the "noise" Sean was referring to was the self generated noise of
the DAC, E.g. the Wadia DAC. It maintains this level of self noise even
when the signal is digitally attenuated, therefore there is the same
amount of noise, and less signal, which equates to a lower SNR ratio.
There is no way around it in digital attenuation, while analog
attenuation OTOH attenuates the self generated noise of the device
along with the signal.

You shouldn't be setting the jumpers to avoid a "software glitch or
human error", if you care about sound quality, you should be setting
them to get the highest possible performance out of the DAC. The same
goes for the Wadia. It would be better to use analog attenuation before
the amp so that you can get the highest SNR out of the DAC you paid
dearly for.
