Problem is that the poll question was a little vague, so some people (myself included) voted "yes" when we should have voted "no", for the simple reason that we consider using passive attenuation to be "direct". The manual even says > you can connect the TP to an amp without any gain control by using the > attenuator switches inside the TP. The TP's internal attenuators only operate on the unbalanced outputs. I (and many others) use the balanced outputs, hence the requirement for external attenuation. That's why you need to get the gain staging correct. Here's an interesting thought. Everyone talks about what might happen in the unlikely event that the TP emits full-scale white noise. But consider the case where you do have a normal preamp in circuit (most of which have gain) being driven from a TP at 100% volume. What about the unlikely event that someone else in the family (small children are notorious for fiddling) turns the volume up to maximum and you don't notice before switching on and playing Death Magnetic (complete with its digital clipping). This seems just as likely a scenario as the infamous "burst of white noise". -- cliveb Transporter -> ATC SCM100A ------------------------------------------------------------------------ cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55246 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
