If that DAC had a web interface to control the volume, the same caveat
would exist- but more importantly the fact remains that it's a less
than ideal implementation of DVC. Glitches/bursts are moot if you set
the jumper correctly, or use a fixed attenuator on the SB, which will
allow you to use the VC in its _upper ranges_, the ideal way.  

Are you afraid a couple resistors will harm the SQ more than reducing
the SNR of the DAC significantly (if a lot of attenuation is required)?
