Not wanting to state the obvious but you can't compare a simple attenuator to a preamp. I use attenuators and I've found them transparent. A properly constructed attenuator provides the benefit of an optimal gain structure (as cliveb mentions) maximising the effective SNR of the source. IMO degradation of signal from the simple attenuator is probably far from audible and is certainly outweighed by the benefit, end of story.
