If you mean that a (properly designed and not broken) dac can correct *any* signal distortion coming from the preceding gear, I think you ask too much from modern dacs. If you mean that most of this differences (distortions) are not audible: well, perhaps. Certainly not audible to most people.

If you mean that most people don't notice any differences in cables, you're probably right. I even know people who can't distinguish amplifiers or even speakers... Still, for the ones that can distinguish such differences, depending on their amplifier/speakers' value, sometimes it's easier to upgrade cables than speakers or amps. I know no such "decent amp" for which a 10meter telephone cable and a 10m 4mm² OFC cable sound the same. As I haven't listened to all amplifiers out there, I would be glad if you could tell me which amplifier are you talking about. ;) And certainly, I don't take what Stereophile states for granted.
