You can buy any meridian dvd player they still sports an error counter.
and use DVD rom drives.

The error counter is kinda funny most cd's it's on zero all the time,
but I tried a very old burned CD-R it was up to 10000 errors when the
whole CD completed. But the documentations says nothing on what kind of
error is counted probably all of them, would be more interesting to
count errors that the error correction can't fix.

and yes on topic :) I don't hear any difference on 16/44.1 material
with a good rip and my meridian DVD.
