The volume difference between the Duet analog output and your CD player is related to the low analog output level of the Duet. The unbalanced output level of a typical CD player is about 2.0 V rms. If you look at the Duet specs you can see that the output is 4.2 Vpp (peak to peak). Doing the math you got 4.2/2/sqrt(2)=1.4849 V rms. You can improve the loudness level with an external DAC. I have the CA Dacmagic (2.1 V rms output) and I noticed a great increase not only in detail and clarity but also in loudness (even without using the balanced connectors).
