Based on the previous 15 posts I think that a consensus is starting to form. Other than the posts which address the volume issue, all the other posts recommend using an external DAC. In addition not one post says not to use an external DAC.
Now it's just a question of which DAC to get. I'll let other people give recommendations for an external DAC since I don't have enough experience with many of the more popular DACs out there. Two of my external DACs are built into my Headroom headphone amps, another DAC is built into my home theater receiver and I also have a Transporter.
