You could train a mouse to move the shift lever to change the volume.
Moving the shift lever would also lower a curtain covering a picture of
a threatening big cat that frightens the mouse.  The curtain would move
up or down (exposing or covering the cat picture) based upon changes in
air pressure (and thus size) of a balloon. The balloon is connected to
the spout of a tea kettle, and the tea kettle is on a hot plate next
the the couch. From the comfort of the couch, simply turn the heat up
or down on the hot plate to change the volume of the amp.

Rube Goldberg would be proud.
