Well, I thought I had a good suggestion, but frankly, if there's in
internal gain control, that's certainly the easiest!

What I was going to say, was that many (most?) receivers can use their
tape monitor function to allow an external device to alter things. 
Back in the day, when graphic equalizers were the hot audio add-on, you
would run the tape out to the eq in, and the eq out to the tape input. 
Then use the source switch to select the input, and leaving the tape
monitor engaged, you could add the line level eq to the sound.  The
same technique could be used to insert a passive attenuator into the
signal path, thus negating the need for a high power L-pad on the
speaker outputs.

If you don't want to open your receiver up, and play with the
internals, this might still be a good alternative.
