In the olden days, a Preamp was mostly a "before" amp that raised the
phonograph input level up to the same as other sources (tape, tuner,
etc.). It literally amplified the turntable input.

Then and now, the secondary functions of a preamp are:

1) input selection (picking between tuner, tape, TV, DVD, aux, etc.)
2) volume control
3) tone controls

These days, a lot of preamps don't even have the phono input or real
pre-amp.

My Classe integrated does not have phonograph input, and I never use the
switching section. So I use it as a simple power amp.

Most modern sources don't really need the "amp" part of a preamp.
