For what it’s worth, here are my two cents about this subject. I do
think that linear power can improve sound quality on analog outputs. The
SB3 with stock PSU is a decent performer. It does outperform my previous
owned Denon CD transport costing three times as much (and a few years
older). However I always found ‘S’ sounds slightly hard/not natural
sounding on the SB3. Since my linear DIY psu, I’ve noticed improvements
in this area.

There is absolute no need to spend tons of money on a PSU. I’ve spend
around $25 on parts. I’ve seen aftermarket PSU’s for the SB3 costing
about a house. There isn’t a single reason to justify that, besides
maybe mind masturbation. Do it only if you use the analog outputs, don’t
bother when you going to use a DAC.

A DAC can certainly improve things. I know because I own a Transporter
also ;-)

As most people will agree on, the biggest improvements can be made with
speakers, 2nd the amp and 3rd the source. When the first two are not at
a certain level, I wouldn’t bother at all about SB3 mods (The SB3 is
good enough).
