I was a "burn in" skeptic as well! 

It took me 20 yrs to believe in the concept that cables make a
difference! I now "believe" in both! It's a strange thing for sure. 

The rationale behind burn in for capacitors has some basis in theory.
The idea is that during the process of "winding" the thin film,
micro-perforations develop. There is an arching across these tiny holes
until the gap is fused with melted material thus repairing the hole. 

Why cables sound better over time is one I still cant quite get! The
concept with cables is supposed to be based on the analogy of a stream
or river that flows through and around rocks and obstacles. Over time
those "rocks" are worn down or moved out of the flow so as not to impede
it! - That one is a little tough!
