Loads of choice in quality active speakers space these days - from expensive - PMC free fs1, Meridian, Dynaudio MC15, AVi 9.1s - to the more humble Audioengine 5s that i am listening to as I type this. (Tom Petty, Wildflowers FLAC via SB3 internal DAC, to be precise). At £250 the A5s ably demonstrate benefits of active speakers without breaking the bank. I too am looking at 'better' actives (read more costly...) with/without separate DAC.
I am mindful of many of the pro studio active monitor reviews, since these seem to mainly focus on nearfield close quarter listening, rather than a more conventional home room listening experience. Still waiting to listen to the much praised (hyped..?) AVI 9.1s, but I have had a good listening to the Dyn MC15s which I liked alot in conjunction with the matching Dynaudio sub.
