I found this interesting - and maybe opens up a whole new avenue for the right-brained amongst us :-)
Test setup: 15-second WAV file ripped from CD with AccurateRip. Soundcard=M-Audio 24/96 Record analogue out from SB3 and compare in ADM against the pristine WAV rip. That's a brutal test of the SB3 transport+internal DAC+cables+soundcard. You'd expect a pretty low correlation between the original WAV and what comes out of the analogue outputs... and sure enough it averages out at around 23dB correlation (that's low). Then I repeated the test with my rebuilt MF DAC connected to coax s/pdif of the SB3. This time the correlation averages at 35dB - nearly 50% closer to the original WAV file. This difference can only be attributable to the DAC+s/pdif cable - everything else was kept constant. I will now repeat with the Touch. This might be a way of comparing the "accuracy" of various DAC's? I wonder if any DAC can get a really good score on this test - over 60dB correlation would be very, very good, over 80dB would be amazing - pretty much a "straight wire with unity gain" to misquote PW. Unfortunately I don't have any other DAC's to try with. -- Phil Leigh You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it ain't what you'd call minimal...
