Hi Phil, Just to resume:
We Know there is no difference in the two bit stream coming out form the SB spdif output, that's finaly clear also to me. I'm with you stating there is THE SAME ORDER of difference between wav and flac PLAYBACK, that the one is between two different playback of the same file. Thanks to your tests and explanation, we Know that those difference are in playback becose some 'time error' (drift), that you can correct converting back and recording, but NOT just playng the analog output via PRE, AMP and Speaker. In other words, You'll always have difference in playback! (...hard to realize!). We(both)and anyone could lissen to those differences. So, IF difference between A and B and those beetween A and C are almost the same, could you say B = C ? NO, and for sure less than ...almost! To be REALY SURE we should: a. trow away "time errors" ALSO when you play via PRE, AMP and Speakers, but I undestand there is no way to, correct? or b. be sure that difference between FLAC/WAV and WAV/WAV due to drift are systemic and EXACTLY the same, Are we? Otherways we can only BELIVE on that, we are only almost sure, and how important is "almost" in Audio is a new discussion that we could open if you like. Back to block, but at least now we Know that "exactly the same" is a "chimera", from the listening point of view. Very Instructive and amazing discussion, shall we continue focusing on how to get better the playback reducing "timing errors" influences? Have a good Week end.
