I don't know if I'm any help, but I am using a pair of ML subs with my
AE5's and it works a treat.

The MLs (Martin-Logan) have a variety of interconnection options, but I
use the ML active crossover (70hz) to feed my AE's the line level
high-pass signal, and then have my ML subs set at 40hz. This
measures and sounds pretty darned good in my room.

There are too many good reasons to use a nice sub (or two if your
wallet is OK with it). Removing the LOW frequency signal from the
satellites really "frees up" the sound of the satellites, leaves
amplifier power in reserve, lowers distortion/coloration, and also
gives one greater options with regards to placement of speakers.

Putting old biases in the garbage can where they belong...I couldn't
imagine life without having well integrated subs in my music system.

IMO it's a good idea!
