I'm using a REL to but with line level from my HT-preamp works great in
that application too, in the case of digital HT-preamp it's best to use
the filter integrated there.

I use a stadium 3 xover at 50Hz mains are good for 30Hz but a bit off
overlap in xo region is good.
And I wanted to keep the main "tones" of the instruments to my main
speakers.
Imho there no substitute for large floor-standing speakers even when
you are using a sub. With tiny satellites the xo gets to high etc you
start to hear the sub.

Regarding xovers the one used should have a rather steep response 24dB
slope or even better if you use a high xo frequency.

The theory is that you can not localize sound <125Hz something, that's
probably correct.
But imho you can always localize a subwoofer filtered around 125Hz ,
filter is not infinitesimaly steep it had distorsion and cabinet noises
etc. So I go for an crossover <50Hz and large mains, this makes this
effect almost unoticable in practical use
