Have we actually said that we do know how it sounds? Or that it sounds bad? No, because you are quite right - we can't possibly without hearing it. However, I am extremely sceptical about the degree to which a cable can effect the sound of a system. Yes, there may be a difference. Yes, cable A may sound better than cable B. But I find it very hard to believe that it can make "a big difference" unless there is something fundamentally broken/badly designed in the equipment at one or both ends of the cable. Does your DAC have a BNC s/pdif input? If so, did you try a good quality, 1.5m or 2m, BNC-BNC 75 ohm coax s/pdif cable? I've not used them myself, but others recommend http://bluejeanscable.com/store/digital-audio/index.htm. A suitable cable from them will cost around $20. I'd be interested to know how such a cable compares to your AES/EBU cable.
