If you're OK with the 96/24 limitation and Squeezebox Software,
Transporter is the perfect *transport* you can think of. I myself have
quite high-end system, and even compared it on more high-endish one
with EMM Labs 30K$ box. Transporter is perfect, and its flexibility has
no equal.

With DAC, things become more complicated. To my ears, high-rez music
sound outstanding on Transporter, better, for example, than on PS Audio
PWD.

With CD-quality, I did not like the sound that much, but here there are
multiple options to fit your taste. Like using upsampling on the
server-side with different kind of filters, or modding the DAC with
some better components... (what I did recently) 

With its 1250$ price on audiogon (I saw a week ago, entirely new unit
in a box) it is a steal.
