I tried inguz , was very difficult to use it to hear difference or
changes - I mean ergonomically wise , so I abandoned it
I also have a Roland AP700 , same thing as the DEQ , earlier model tho
and it too has a veiling effect on the sonics.
What I find both the Roland and DEQ to do is to strip some of the air ,
decay and low level detail out so you dont get quite the same impact.
I think any hardware device in the digital path , even in bypass acts
on the signal in some way or another- for EG my Z-sys doesnt bypass the
volume etc 
I also use my EQ to "remaster" lousy recordings on the fly , which
makes some stuff very listenable.
