If we are talking old SB2 and SB3 afiak 100% volume is the same as fixed
volume . Easilly cked with HDCD or DTS files

But it is easily adjusted from all kinds of interfaces if you lock the
volume it may actually stay at 100% :)
and if you for example uses HDCD or DTS files 99% and 100% is a world
apart as some signal bits get shifted to wrong place when using SB2/3
digital volume and the encoding breaks.

Further if you have 24bit files you want to send to the DAC volume must
be 100% all the time. if you use the volume they will not be 24bit
anymoore.

This fixed settings are for convenience, to make it easier to always
have 100% volume .

If you sync players and sync volume the "fixed" player would ignore the
volume settings for the others .

So in short if bit-perfect output is desired (for whatever reason) keep
volume at 100% as the player have digital volume, but howe it's done is
not important , other than fixed it is convenient.
