Just to clarify, ADM (indeed, any "null test for difference") relies on
the only thing changing between tests being the thing you are trying to
detect.

In particular, ADM can correct very successfully for gain and sample
timing differences. What it can't do is to correct for quasi-random
cyclical distortions such as "wow & flutter" that are induced by
mechanical fluctuations and which distort both frequency and amplitude
at points in time...

This isn't an issue with hard disk replay (because it is truly
identical each time). It's also mostly true of CD, but not necessarily
100% every time, because of error concealment/interpolation.

I don't understand this remark:

"From an engineering perspective his tests are irrelevant. He is
comparing apples and pears."

I'm absolutely comparing an unmodded apple with a modded apple... and
these tests are therefore very interesting from an engineering
perspective, because they detect that something is indeed happening. I
can't see how these tests could be made more relevant... but I'm happy
to be enlightened.

As for the "cumulative" issue... as far as I can tell the effect of the
mods is fully commutative, so sequence is irrelevant:

1+2+3=6
3+1+2=6

I could have applied the mods in a different sequence and still ended
up at the same final test result.

The towel analogy doesn't work because the mods aren't working in
"layers", they are working as "slices of a pie" AFAICT.
