John will know more about this than me, but I recall that back in the early/mid 90's several Japanese manufacturers put out "no-compromise" CD players that were usually one-box designs. The obvious high-end example is Accuphase; another is Micro-Seiki (better known for their amazing three-arm turntable). Even the likes of Sony/Pioneer/JVC got in on the act, although my guess is that there must have been some degree of cost considerations in those cases.
