Where does the 10db number come from? Only 10dB of "headroom" is pretty limiting. In my own experience, 25 dB or so is OK (i.e., stay above 50% on the SB volume control).
I've used a pair of Rothwell balanced 10dB attenuators for doing the direct connection. However, depending on the output voltage of the DAC and the sensitivity of the amp, you might need more attenuation than this. You can also find various variable attenuators for sale, but you do pay more for balanced ones. However, NHT makes a cheap one: http://www.nhthifi.com/s.nl/it.A/id.827/.f Note the low input impedance. I'd try to stay around 50 Ohms or less on the source impedance.
