A side affect of using TTOUT -d is that the sound effects are routed to the digital out, normally they go to a separate DAC that drives the little internal speaker. The sound effects have a sample frequency of 32KHz, so when any bleeps, blurps etc are produced your external DAC has to switch speeds on the fly to play them. Thats probably why you hear crackling. Your best bet is to just turn them off so you won't have speed changes going to the DAC every time you touch the screen.
