Assuming WAW=WAV, the main reason for not using only WAVs for me is that the tagging for WAVs is problematic to say the least. FLACs can be tagged with many different tools, and the tags can be extended to include one's own variations, which you can use in Squeezebox, Foobar or other such tools.
