I would not use a 9v "transistor radio" battery, those have fairly high internal resistance. A much better choice would be a 7.2V litium ion battery used for things like RC cars etc. These have very low internal resistance and are in the range of that regulator.
Personally I would also put a UCC polymer cap across the battery (something in the 200-470uF range). Try the battery first. Building a GOOD power supply for this purpose is not trivial.
