Are you using analog out? And CD music as a source? Because in that case
you would still not have any resolution loss when using the Receiver.
It's probably an issue of either the input impedance on your amp or S/N
which gets worse when you turn the volume down or just the lack of
volume which is known to make music perceived to sound better.

Digital volume resolution loss only applies when you use 24 bit
material (should be good enough to be barely noticeable) or digital
outputs at 16 bit word size and a 16 bit dac, at the 24 bits the
resolution loss should still be below what you gain by going from 16 to
24 bit (a CD is 16 bit).
