That's a myth. I don't know about Sonos (although I don't believe it, generally their digital audio processing is inferior to the Squeezebox) but all Squeezebox players use 24 bit for internal processing. I looked at the volume rams and you are right, the ramp used in SqueezePlay will generate loss below a volume of 18. BTW, that's NOT the case for the receiver, at least if the old ramp in the code is correct, there only volume 1 and 2 have some loss. Sound quality loss is real and very significant if you use 16 bit processing somewhere downstream of the volume control, at 24 bit it's much less of an issue, if you use 16 bit material you've got 8 bits of margin (a factor of 256) unless you run into loss of resolution. Rounding errors are another issue but they are generally only on a scale of 1/2 LSB which means 1/33554432 of the maximum volume. There is not a lot you can do "better" or "worse" in the digital domain. You could go to 32 bit internally but that doesn't help anything if your interface is only 24 bits. So the real question is: can your amp handle 24 bit input. If yes, look for other reasons for your flat sound. If no, use analog I/O between the SB and the amp. -- pippin --- see iPeng, the Squeezebox iPhone remote and *New: iPeng for iPad*, at penguinlovesmusic.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89228 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
