OK, I decided to take a good look at the M's first, did a thorough external check initially and discovered that my wife had put her sewing kit on top of one - duh, fancy not noticing that! - kit removed problem solved.
Castle's still faulty and I have swapped leads over and it is that speaker. So when I have the time I will try taking it apart.
