Since thinking rationally about audio and relying more on science and measurements (XTZ analyzer etc) two things have happened: 1. The sound I am experiencing has improved greatly because (I believe) I've been focussing on things that really matter. 2. Although the sound has improved I've become more aware of how limited sound quality is under normal conditions, in absolute terms. I'm happy with my gear - I can't think of anything I'd want instead so I am lucky. It's just I've got real about how good audio replay can be in real domestic environments with normal recordings.
(1) and (2) sound contradictory but basically it's a process of constantly downgrading my opinion about my current SQ (for my system/music) - whilst downgrading opinion of my past SQ even more severely!
