Exactly. Although I have many older recordings of course, I am particularly sad that all the advances in speakers, amps, 24-bit audio, high sampling rate, low jitter, DSD, etc... have become the proverbial "casting pearls before swine" for most modern recordings (especially in the rock/pop genres). It makes it really hard to be a lover and CONSUMER of "new music" to fork over cash and feel satisfied about the quality of the product in an environment like this. "Customer satisfaction" is important and I think that many of us have become very disillusioned by what's out there. An ironic, tragic, and sad situation. For example, in 2012/2013, in order to get the best sounding version of a new album like fun.'s "Some Nights", the digital audiophile is forced to seek out a vinyl rip because both the CD and "hi-rez" 24/44 HDTracks versions come from the same disgusting DR6 overcompressed and fatigue-inducing mastering (I bought the CD, check out http://www.dr.loudness-war.info/ for the HDTracks DR). The vinyl is ~DR10 (not great but not unreasonable). This is of course not unusual and since I really quite enjoy this album, feel uncomfortable but have downloaded the vinyl rip off "questionable" sources in order to have a taste of what I feel should have been on that CD I purchased... I don't know what "the fix" is, but it's a sick business model when it seems like the "manufacturer" has to "break" the product in order to sell it and the music fans (I'm sure on average the folks participating in music forums like this one spend much more $$$ on the music than average) are made to feel like criminals due to lack of options to obtain what seems like the unbroken/reasonable quality. (In a heartbeat I would join a music service that allows me to download lossless 16/44 albums as either "compressed" and "uncompressed" versions.
