On their own they aren't going do anything, of course. But most forms of renewable energy will also require huge amounts of energy storage in order not to still require fossil fuel generators on standby to fill in the gaps. And with pretty well all forms of energy usage moving over to electricity, this standby capacity would actually need to be many fold larger than the total current fossil fuelled generating capacity, to cover those windless and sunless times.
