Check if the PAM installation includes pam-mount (libpam_mount.so) This PAM module is sometimes optional, so it may not be present. What this module does is mount file systems into the directory tree based on the user's login authentication. The Gnome greeter, KDE greeter, Xdm, and anything else which uses the PAM authentication stack will (or could) generate calls to pam-mount, which in turn calls mount (which might then call mount.xyz helper, such as mount.aufs). Look for its configuration file in: /etc/security/pam_mount.conf.xml Optionally in: ~/.pam_mount.conf.xml Directions as comments in the xml file. At least in a Debian based system, which I think is the topic here. Mike > I am afraid some process (including aufs-util) might mis-interpret > /etc/mtab.
