reg query HKLM\hardware\devicemap\serialcomm
pause

Cut & paste from my .bat file created using Notepad.  I added the CD\ to get
it back to the root directory as I thought that was the initial problem. It
wasn't..
Maybe I just don't have that HKLM key in the registry, no Serial Port on
this computer.

Hi Ross,
it works on my Win7 machine. Did you put the word pause on the second line?
Try entering the first line at a command prompt and see if it returns a
value.
If you created the .txt file using Word, try creating it using WordPad or
any other simple text editor  (Word adds hidden formatting that screws
things up).
Failing all that, I can email you my file!
