Mark,

I was thinking more of the phone designer's tradeoffs. Larger screen, more power for same brightness per square centimeter in the backlight. A 5"screen has 56% more area than a 4". I've noticed in the specs that the larger screens generally have lower brightness. The phones have very fancy power management schemes (for better battery life on a full charge) which are substantially negated by leaving the backlight on full brightness and by running the processor to constantly update the moving map. Yes, you should run the phone/PNA whatever from ship's supply. Darryl is right about power supplies. Some are terribly noisy. Erich Wittstock found one from Seedstudio that appears to be quiet. See:

I bought 5 but shipping wasn't all that cheap which substantially increased the landed cost.

You may be better off with a smaller screen that has more contrast. Provide a USB port on the panel supplied by ship’s power to worry less about power consumption (or, more accurately: to move the power consumption issue somewhere else :) - mark _______________________________________________ Aus-soaring mailing list [email protected] http://lists.base64.com.au/listinfo/aus-soaring
