Jason,
The official "hoops" are available from the FAI website but from my
experience with the IGC there may be unpublished criteria you have to meet.
This happened with the original FR rules which allowed a GPS connected by
cable to the FR. The "security" is pure horseshit which can be achieved by
having an OO at both ends of the flight as had been done for years with
cameras and barographs.
Now that SA has been turned off GPS altitude is at least as good as
pressure altitude(better in my opinion after error analysis) and it should
be noted that the rest of the FAI uses real geometric heights above MSL for
altitude records etc, even if measured with pressure instruments, by
converting to geometric altitude using atmospheric temperature and other
corrections.
A logger using only GPS data is cheap and simple. The latest Garmin Etrex
units alone will do but if you wanted more trackpoints etc a logger like
the one Leigh refers to will do fine. While we are at it the motor glider
engine sensor with a microphone is unnecessarily complex given that all
modern motorgliders need 12 volt power to extend the engine. A simple
on/off dtetct for engine master circuit is all that is required.
As for bringing pressure to bear on the GFA/FAI, good luck. I lost interest
in the IGC after the logger rules affair and their kiddie badges and world
records that are approved after "approved" logger failures.
