CASA issued a warning about using LRP(lead replacement petrol) a while
back. It seems that it can precipitate a fine powder which can block
filters etc. It is NOT approved for use with aircraft having a mogas STC
for super.
I used to use super/Amsoil two stroke mix in the Ventus TOP. I tried Avgas
but lose about 100rpm. Talking with the owner of a Ventus CM the Hirth
engine in that suffered a similar or greater loss of performance. It seems
that the higher octane avgas burns slower so effectively retarding the
timing leading to the loss of performance. Running on a mixture of about
20% 100LL avgas and the rest unleaded has restored the performance in both
cases.
As for running Lycomings etc on unleaded I believe Bathurst used to run
their Pawnee on it. Maybe still do. Anyone know?
Low compression engines should be OK on it I believe. The US has approved
an 82 UL standard which is basically US unleaded auto fuel but the auto
fuel has a slightly tighter spec in a couple of areas. It is OK to use on
aircraft which had an auto fuel STC. Unleaded is my fuel of choice for the
BD4(Lycoming O-320A2B 7:1 compression ratio) when leaded fuel becomes
unavailable. It will sure stop the plug fouling we get on 100LL - bottom
plugs only since we installed an electronic ignition running automotive
plugs in the tops. Highly recommended but can only be installed on
homebulit experimentals.
