Our club is fortunate to have a Shell aviation fuel manager as one of its instructors so this matter gets a reasonable airing.
You can contact Shell directly for the official position and they are most happy to respond. I understand from Trevor Hancock (Shell) that the additive has not been made in Australia for many years and has always been imported for their blending purposes for make 100LL and 130. They do not envisage anything changing other than a reduction in the total amount they need to import. In regard to LRP use in aviation applications their official position is they do not endorse it and recommend only AV gas be used. Quite separately they advise that any engine previously running lead petrol will be afforded equal or better levels of lubrication protection from LRP use. Trevor believes Shells plans for importation of the additive and blending of AV gas, will remain unchanged for at least the next 10 years and he has had no advice on any likely future change to that.
