The current GFA practice of annual checks is valid for flying in general
GA manages quite well with a bi- annual. Let's go with that. It at least
halves your risk exposure to flying in club two seater with a GFA instructor.
(and probably should be applied on a Launch Type basis). High Altitude
Soaring and Ridge Flying could probably be reviewed less often (2 or 3 years).
I can just see it now. A pilot in an oxygen equipped glider on a good day
breaks off his climb at 12000 feet because his high altitude rating isn't
current any more. A little later he lands out because his ridge soaring
rating has lapsed and he doesn't use the working ridge that was available.
Get real.
The licence proposal is an opportunity to change the way things are being
done, not perpetuate a system which is a turn off for large numbers of people.
There is CASA documentation that CASA's role in sport aviation is to
protect innocent third parties, not the presumably informed consenting
adults taking part.
You can make all the rules you like for yourself and stick by them, just
leave the rest of us alone. I still remember your remark at an
airworthiness seminar about being prepared to deal with any number of
pieces of paper in the name of safety. It was a stupid comment then and
still is.
