Stupid and unrealistic rules? I see nothing stupid and unrealistic in a
system that requires people to maintain and demonstrate their
competencies - which is exactly what a rating systems is designed to do.
This way, people who think they are safe but are NOT get found and
appropriate remedial action is taken before a funeral becomes necessary.

Now - as I said in my message, I realise that there will be some people
for whom the annual cometency demonstration may be unnecessary, but a
well set standard will cover a significant majority of glider pilots for
whom competency/concurrency is a significant safety issue.

Those few who exceed the competency standard because they have
significant wedge tailed eagle in their genetic makeup are
'disadvantaged' by this approach - except that the sky is a safer place
from them as a result of us mere mortals being subjected to appropriate
checks.

This is a very different argument. I agree completely that bad rules
need to be removed, but this does NOT mean there should be no rules -
and particularly we need good competency/currency standards to ensure
safety.

Ho hum - in addition to having previously been a gliding instructor
(with relatively few student complaints IIRC) I also have a fairly
significant background in formal education/training at the adult level -
again with relatively few complaints from students). Feel free to pity
my students - I give you my total permission - but the evidence suggests
you could better direct your emotional energy.

I am truly glad that you don't want to be an instructor, as you seem to
be lacking in the humility needed to continuously learn (including from
your students).

I know that I have faults and much to learn. It appears that
you know everything - which must make gliding terribly boring for you.
Why don't you do yourself a favour and take up scuba diving, mud
wrestling or some such and give the rest of us mere mortals a break?
