Don,
Sorry to hear about your brother, I hope he is ok.

However when was the last time an airliner did a go round or something
similar relatively routine controlled procedure, did you see the
passenger interview telling you that is was a non event. No what we see
is the hysterical passenger crying and telling us how he or she thought
they were going to die.

They get there 15 seconds of fame and the Journos get a story. There is
no news in good news.

Subject: RE: [Aus-soaring] Bad Media problem

The thing to remember is that all of you have sat down and watched the 6
o'clock news and all of you have bought newspapers, you are the medias
market, you all want the product. The problem is the perseption that the
public have of media employees (journalists) as being unapproachable
when they're out doing their job, it's not true. Like anything and
everything, there are people who are good at their jobs and people who
are bad at their jobs. Believe it or not there are good journalists out
there.

The mistake everyone makes is when there is a mishap affecting your
sport nobody wants to talk to the media and give them CORRECT
information, everyone runs the other way.....wrong thing to do!!! Sure
nobody likes bad news in their back yard but when it is someone else
everyone asks, which aircraft? What happened? Anyone hurt? You've got to
remember that all of you have a thirst for information when something
happens, anyone that says otherwise is lying. So why turn your backs on
the reporter at the airfield when all they are trying to do is get
information correct?

The media cannot win, everyone wants their product but nobody will
assist them.

It affects me personally whenever a mishap happens at my club because
the first thing that happens is I get a phone call from my employer
(channel 7) asking for information. This only happened 3 months ago when
my brother flew a DG-100 into powerlines and was seriously injured.

Please understand you all watch the news, in my opinion you should talk
to any media that you come across and tell them the truths, that goes
for all codes of sport aviation, in the long run you are far better off
because they will never ever go away.
