to see what one of the gliding clubs OS is doing take a look at
http://www.schaenissoaring.ch/webcam_schaenis_nord.cfm? SelectedMenuID=100
but it take a lot of cash to set something like that up.

What do you mean starting to. Been using the local (SA) BOM data for years.
One thing to be aware of is the update rates for the free service. Some so called
AWS's are only updated 4 times per day on the web site. Some reports on those pages
require someone to get out of bed an record the weather still.
There are 10 minute per update pages available for each state for selected locations.
Been using this service for voice over IP weather reports and weather beacon broadcasts
on the amateur radio network for a very long time. Without even being on the internet I can
obtain a 4 day weather forecast or current local weather very easily.

Glad to see some other states are starting to be available. A pity that
BOM's web site people use different terms for each state's "Observations"
page - some specifically mention "AWS" in the hyperlink description and some
do not. The last time I looked I did a search for AWS but could only find
the ones in NSW.
Can't complain too much about this free service - it's better than looking
out the window and taking a punt.

The BOM do publish data from their Automatic Weather Stations in South
Unfortunately a lot of it may not immediately suitable for gliding, spread
out as they are over a wide region of the state. The SA mallee misses out
rather badly.

I know of only one gliding club webcam / weather station in Australia, at
Darling Downs in QLD (www.ddsc.org.au)
In NSW the kind people at the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) show the Automatic
Weather Station (AWS) data updated every hour, and with a 72 hour history,
which is useful for tracking trends. I think NSW got it done during the 2000
Olympics, when they added several short-term AWS units to their network for
prediction of conditions at some events, e.g. sailing on Sydney Harbour.
Despite several approaches, they have not expanded that coverage to the rest
of Australia. Suggest you and your fellow glider pilots hassle the BOM via
their web site feedback or phone numbers. They are already collecting the
AWS data, it's just a matter of them dropping it onto their web site in the
same fashion as for NSW.
The other useful thing are the daily BOM temperature traces from around
Australia. Mark Newton kindly makes them available via
http://slash.dotat.org/cgi-bin/atmos
There might be one near to your area that is of some use to you.
Cheers
