I know and respect a lot of the LAMES that maintain our helicopter fleet. They
are professionals and they know their ACFT. They are amateurs when it comes to
gliders; not like the GFA maintenance people that I entrusted my glider to.
Most of them are not interested in my sport of gliding and have no inclination
to learn about the ACFT unless I was to pay them at their rates of pay. I
certainly couldn't afford that. For one thing, they would be learning some
things on the job. I would however let the greenie guy rewire mine because
the glider wiring in general club ACFT is woeful to say the least and he
wouldn't be touching anything else.

My advice would be to stick with the affordable GFA system. If you find a LAME
who is into gliding then you are truly fortunate. He is worth his weight in
gold. If you are lucky enough to be able to pay professional LAME rates outside
the GFA movement you have a choice that is not available to the rest of us. Why
not consider putting your work with a professional GFA workshop though. Chris
Runnecles over here in the west and Tom Gilbert amongst others over east would
do a better job on your glider than the average LAME doing it professionally
where there is no interest in gliding. You would also be supporting the
maintenance facility that supports his bread and butter; gliding.

If you own a Stemme, things might be different as I believe they are complex
and the RIGHT LAME might have more answers initially. But will he be around
next year for you? Again, someone like Tom would have to be my choice in this
situation.
