Whilst operating IS28's for around 20 years, we at VMFG never had a canopy
opening event during spinning with our IS28's. If there was a significant
issue with IS28's in this way then firstly the GCV at Benalla should have
encountered it since they have the greatest hours by far with this type, and
secondly there should be some defect reports with GFA for such events (if
people would bother reporting such).

Eventually the canopy catch plate will wear and need attention/replacement
to ensure there is positive locking beyond spring pressure on the actuating
handle interconnect rod.

Whilst the following is not a guaranteed fix re canopy opening (self-opening
I presume) during spinning, VMFG instituted a bungey loop in 4mm bungey cord
around the canopy actuating handle and down to an attachment point. This
restrains the canopy from lifting up too far (or catastrophically) if not
locked down in the first place and otherwise with the handle locked down,
the bungey assists keeping the handle closed. Of course the instruction is
that the bungey cord is not put in place when operations are with emergency
parachutes worn.

Cheers

It appears these have an ongoing problem with the canopy opening during
spin.
Apart from not spinning, is there an effective remedy?
