Paul,

I have somewhat similar experience to you, with some 52 flights and 49 hours in my club's Puchacz, including cross-country. I find it a delight to fly, and have never experienced any untoward handling characteristics. Neither have I heard any concerns raised by my fellow club-members about their experiences. I agree with you about the rather emotive language used by some, which I find less than helpful.
I think the report by Chris Thorpe/Bill Dean is very interesting, with most "accidents" involving complications like deliberate spinning from 1200', winch-cable collisions etc.
Perhaps there are two types of glider pilots - those that like to spin, and those that don't.
