Apologies for dragging the bigger picture into the discussion...
Sadly a squillion more people die every day from melanoma, prostate cancer, childhood leukemia and many more. Public researchers are so starved of funding that they have been known to hock their own homes just to keep the ball rolling. Unfortunately the victims just die quietly and don't get to make a splash on national media thus failing to invoke a mad panic in the media which gets to attract further Govt funding.
Road safety is very public and yet in a recent discussion on the ABC it was stated that the actual return on 'money spent/lives saved' is in fact poorer than medical research. The driving population appears to have reached 'education saturation' where throwing more money at it is unlikely to have any further effect in actual reduction.
The amount of money being blown on Airlines security and even mores on the reason as to why we need more Airlines security ( dealing with a a fundamentalist religious zealot with nuclear arms capability. That's gdub not Osama...) could only leave a sane person shaking their head. Particularly when there are so many other delivery vectors.
Heck if we funded education a little better we might raise more kids with sufficient reasoning ability to recognise what a nonsense the current deal is. They might be sufficiently lateral to see the coming wave of environmental problems, which have been clearly identified as orders of magnitude worse than any threat posed by terrorism, and actually do something about it. Or perhaps deliver functional foreign policy which tends toward not actually stirring the possum in the first place. Or just watch Big Brother & Pop Stars and hope it will go away...
