I've flown gliders without (about 700 hours in the Mini Nimbus and an
uncomfortable 45 minutes in a Phoebus C, a few Std Cirrus's and a
Nimbus 2) and quite a few powered aircraft with all flying tails with
tabs incluiding our BD4. The tab makes it just like a fixed tail with
elevator. Piper Cherokees and derivatives are the most common with
all flying tails and tabs. You can trim and let go of the stick and
nothing bad happens even in turbulence.
