Gary, It is helpful to remember the words of Albert Einstein when considering statistics of this kind.
He said: "Not everything that counts can be counted. And not everything that can be counted, counts." I can only measure quality by my own opinion - which I would not presume to impose on others. I'm a scorer, not a literary critic. :) Cheers Tim -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Gary Sent: Saturday, 2 June 2007 21:41 To: 'Discussion of issues relating to Soaring in Australia.' Subject: Re: [Aus-soaring] Scoring on aus-soaring Dear Tim, Scoring on the list....??? Good heavens, whatever do you mean? However a more relevant question Dear Tim: how do you measure the QUALITY of each of those many inputs? I too would be interested in knowing the total number of subscribers: Simon, can/will you give us this information, and if not why not? Subject: [Aus-soaring] Scoring on aus-soaring Hi all, I bet you didn't think that it was possible to score on this list... However, being someone who just can't leave facts and figures alone, I have done a brief analysis of the traffic on aus-soaring during May. I did this because for various reasons I had stored an almost complete set of the emails sent during the month, and with some idle curiosity, a spare hour and a spreadsheet came up with the following data: Nbr of emails: 385 Nbr of contributors: 85 Av emails/person: 4.5 Median emails/person: 2 Largest contributor: 36 emails 2nd 26 3rd 19 More than half the contributions were made by 13 people More than 75% were made by 29 people Half the contributors provided 86% of the emails 30 people contributed only once. On topics, I did not have 100% complete data, however based on what I did have: 45 separate topics Most popular topic was Parachute Repacking (38 emails) 2nd was D2C (21) 3rd was Dyneema Rope (18) More than half the emails were on 8 topics More than 75% of emails were on 16 topics 9 topics had only one email On dates, once again I didn't have complete data, however the following emerged: Biggest day was the 30th, with 30 emails 2nd was the 10th, with 25 3rd was the 18th and 25th, with 22 The most popular days for contributions were Thursdays, Fridays and Mondays. Weekends of course, we all go flying so it's relatively quiet. On one day (a Sunday) there was no traffic (maybe it was down...) I am not trying to draw conclusions from any of this - it's simply a set of data as far as I am concerned. Names will not be named, and I have no intention of awarding any prizes. The exercise is relatively easy so I might continue it for a month or two to see if there are any trends that can be seen. I don't know how many people are subscribed to the list. It would be interesting to add that into the mix, if Internode is willing to divulge it. Even if we did know, I expect it would be impossible to know their status as GFA members, glider pilots or what other interest they might have.
